TITLE: Yi Lin Gai Cuo (Correcting the Errors in the Forest of Medicine)

AUTHORS: Wang Qing-ren translated by Yuhsin Chung, Herman Oving & Simon Becker

DESCRIPTION:  The Yi Lin Gai Cuo (Correcting the Errors in the Forest of Medicine) is one of the most reprinted books in all of Chinese medicine. Written by Wang Qing-ren in the Qing dynasty, this book is made up of two main parts. The first is Wang’s discussion of the anatomical errors in the classical literature and his suggested corrections based on his study of cadavers.

While these discussions are interesting for their logic, they themselves are not correct. The second part of this book is a discussion of the clinical use of the Zhu Yu Tang (Stasis-expelling Decoction) series of formulas created by Wang. These are some of the most effective and commonly used formulas in Chinese medicine.

These formulas include:

  • Xue Fu Zhu Yu Tang (Mansion of Blood Stasis-expelling Decoction)
  • Ge Xia Zhu Yu Tang (Infra-diaphragmatic Stasis-expelling Decoction)
  • Shao Fu Zhu Yu Tang (Lesser Abdominal Stasis-expelling Decoction)
  • Shen Tong Zhu Yu Tang (Body Pain Stasis-expelling Decoction)
  • Tong Qiao Zhu Yu Tang (Orifice-freeing Stasis expelling Decoction)

This is the book that elevated blood stasis to one of the most important disease mechanisms and patterns within Chinese medicine. Wang’s original text is included in the book and has been translated, annotated and commented on by a team of two practitioners (one Chinese and one European) and a sinologist. In addition, this book also includes numerous published clinical trials and case histories on the use of Wang’s eleven most important formulas.
